easyJet issues holiday warning for British tourists | Travel News | Travel

easyJet has issued a holiday warning for British tourists as train strikes could cause “disruption” over the “next few days”.

An airline spokesperson said: “Train companies across the UK will be operating a reduced schedule on September 1 and September 2, 2023, with disruption likely in the next few days.

“As there will be an extremely limited service, please make alternative travel arrangements to and from the airport if you can.

“If you need to travel by train, please allow extra time for your journey and check NationalRail.co.uk and Tfl.gov.uk for the latest travel information and updates.”

Train travel across England will be extremely challenging over the next couple of days due to national strikes.

On September 1, train drivers belonging to the Aslef union are on strike with the majority of trains cancelled.

On Saturday 2, members of the RMT union will go on strike, with about half of England’s trains expected to be cancelled.

Mick Whelan, Aslef’s general secretary, said: “We don’t want to take this action but the train companies, and the Government which stands behind them, have forced us into this place because they refuse to sit down and talk to us.”

Mick Lynch, of the RMT union, said: “Our industrial campaign will continue as long as it takes to get a negotiated settlement.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “The Government has facilitated fair and reasonable pay offers.

“However, union bosses are opting to prolong this dispute by blocking their members from having a vote on these offers. We continue to urge that members are given their say, and disruption is brought to an end.”

Tourists travelling to the airport should leave plenty of time for their journey as they may need to take a coach or taxi instead.

The disruption follows days of chaos caused by air traffic control strikes, which saw hundreds of flights cancelled.

Although the problem was resolved the same day, knock-on delays saw chaos continue into the week with Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and BA affected.
