Europe’s cheapest city break is ‘filled with beautiful parks’ | Travel News | Travel

Planning a city break for 2024? Unfortunately, tourist tax rises in Amsterdam and Paris have made those popular destinations a little expensive this year.

But there’s no need to panic as there are plenty of lesser-known destinations which are far more affordable.

The travel expert team at Wizz Air have rounded up some of the world’s most romantic holiday destinations which won’t break the bank.

Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, has beautiful architecture and it’s one of Europe’s most affordable city breaks.

The Wizz team said: “Bulgaria is known to be a cultural melting pot of Greek, Slavic and Turkish cultures, among others.

“Why not experience these cultures through indulging in a romantic candlelit dinner? Filled with beautiful parks, you can follow up by taking a stroll with your loved ones in some of Sofia’s stunning public spaces, like the Borisova Gradina.”

Sofia’s top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor is the breathtaking St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and one of the country’s most photographed landmarks.

A tourist named ‘Paul’ wrote: “The Alexander Nevsky cathedral is truly impressive. It’s huge from the outside and appears even larger inside.”

Vitosha Boulevard is the city’s main shopping street and the perfect place to grab a cocktail or a souvenir.

If you’re looking for something a little quirkier, the city’s Museum of Illusions has fun and interactive exhibits which appear to challenge gravity.

According to Numbeo, a meal for two in a restaurant costs just £30 in Sofia, making it the ideal romantic bargain break for British couples.
