FDA Responded Too Late to Warning About Baby Formula Plant, Chief Says

U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf told lawmakers his agency was too slow to respond to a whistleblower report about safety failures at the Abbott Laboratories manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Mich., which exacerbated infant formula shortages when it was shut down.

“It [response] was too slow, and there were decisions that were suboptimal along the way,” Mr. Califf told lawmakers. “My basic plan has been to get through this crisis, and then we will be looking at the overall food program with the perspective of reforming it.”
