An inconsolable Iga Swiatek broke down in tears following her shock second round loss in the women’s singles at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 2020 French Open champion was tipped to progress through to the quarter-finals at Tokyo, but was instead bettered by Spain’s Paula Badosa at Ariake Tennis Park on Monday afternoon.

The 20-year-old Polish star lost in straight sets 6-3 7-6, prematurely ending her maiden Olympic campaign.

Swiatek remained on the court for approximately 10 minutes after the defeat, quietly sobbing into a towel.

Badosa will face Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the third round later this week.

Australia’s tennis stars enjoyed mixed success on the court on Day 3 of the Tokyo Games.

Ajla Tomljanovic was also knocked out of the women’s singles competition after suffering a 6-4 3-6 3-6 defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Tomljanovic seemed destined for a shock victory after breaking serve early Svitolina in the second set, but the Ukrainian No. 4 seed showed her class to secure the comeback win.

An injured John Millman showed plenty of resilience to force a third set against Spain’s Alejandro Avidovich Fokina, but ultimately lost 4-6 7-6 3-6.
